Is UMD or UCLA better for an undergraduate career in the entertainment industry?

For an undergraduate aiming at film, television, media, or music entertainment, UCLA offers the more direct route into the industry. Its Los Angeles location puts students near major studios, production companies, agencies, networks, labels, festivals, and working alumni. UCLA also has established undergraduate options through the School of Theater, Film and Television, the Communication major, and the Herb Alpert School of Music.

The biggest advantage is access during the school year. UCLA students can pursue internships, production assistant work, screenings, speaker events, and part-time industry roles without having to leave campus for a summer in another city. That proximity matters in entertainment, where relationships and repeated in-person exposure often lead to later opportunities.

UCLA’s alumni network is especially deep across Hollywood-facing fields, and its campus culture includes many students actively making short films, writing, performing, and organizing creative projects. For someone interested in music, Los Angeles also offers a broad live-performance, recording, publishing, and artist-management ecosystem beyond the university.

UMD can still be a solid choice for media, particularly through communication, journalism, digital media, and opportunities tied to the Washington, D.C., area. It may be more compelling for political media, news, public affairs, documentary work, or communications connected to government and nonprofits. But for a student whose central goal is entering commercial film, television, music, or the broader Los Angeles entertainment pipeline, UCLA provides substantially more immediate industry access and a more aligned professional network.
