UC San Diego vs. Boston University: Which Makes It Easier to Study Abroad Without Delaying Graduation?

Boston University will often be the more straightforward option for fitting a full semester abroad into four years, especially for students in the humanities, social sciences, business, or communications.

UC San Diego offers strong options through UCEAP, UCSD Global Seminars, and other approved programs, but fitting a semester abroad into a four-year plan can require more careful coordination. The quarter system moves quickly, and many UCSD majors, particularly engineering, computer science, and some sciences, have prerequisite-heavy sequences that leave less flexibility. A program may transfer well for university credit but not replace a specific required course in the major.

UCSD can be an excellent choice for a student who is willing to map out courses from the first year, use summers strategically when needed, and select an abroad program with preapproved major or college requirements. For a student whose priority is having the clearest institutional pathway to a semester abroad without slowing degree progress, BU has the advantage.
