How should I compare the admissions difficulty of UC San Diego and Northwestern?

I’m a high school senior deciding where to apply, and I’m trying to understand whether UC San Diego or Northwestern is generally more difficult to gain admission to. I know admissions can vary by major and applicant profile, so I’m mainly asking about the overall difference in selectivity and competitiveness.

Northwestern is substantially more difficult to gain admission to than UC San Diego overall. Northwestern has a far smaller entering class relative to its applicant pool, attracts a highly self-selecting national and international pool, and evaluates applicants through private-school holistic review.

At Northwestern, strong grades and rigorous coursework are baseline expectations rather than clear advantages. The review also places meaningful weight on sustained extracurricular distinction, intellectual fit, recommendations, writing, and the context of the student’s school and opportunities.

UC San Diego’s process is highly competitive but more closely tied to UC application criteria: academic performance in approved coursework, course rigor, achievements, activities, and personal insight responses. Major choice matters more visibly at UC San Diego.

For an application list, treat Northwestern as a high reach for virtually every applicant. UC San Diego is also a reach for many strong students, especially in its most sought-after majors, but a student who is competitive for Northwestern may have meaningfully better odds at UCSD than at Northwestern.
