How does Greek life compare at Boston College and Vanderbilt?

Vanderbilt has a visible, university-recognized fraternity and sorority community, while Boston College does not recognize traditional Greek-letter social organizations. At Vanderbilt, Greek life is one established route into social events, leadership, philanthropy, and a smaller community within a large university. At Boston College, students build their social circles more through residence halls, student organizations, athletics, service, campus traditions, and the surrounding Boston area.

A student who wants the option to rush, attend fraternity or sorority events, and have Greek affiliation play a noticeable role in weekend social life will find Vanderbilt much closer to that experience. Greek organizations host social and philanthropic programming there, but they are not the only way to have an active social life; many students are not involved and participate through clubs, cultural organizations, performing arts, and campus events instead.

Boston College is the clearer fit for someone who wants a more Greek-free campus culture. Social opportunities can still be active, but they tend to be less organized around a formal Greek system and more around friend groups, clubs, dorm communities, sporting events, and off-campus gatherings.
