The biggest practical difference is that Ohio State’s spirit is highly visible year-round and centered on major athletics, while Carnegie Mellon’s is smaller-scale and shows up more through campus traditions, student organizations, and pride in creative and technical work. At Ohio State, Buckeye identity is hard to miss in everyday clothing, campus conversations, residence halls, and especially around football weekends. Carnegie Mellon students have real affection for CMU, but the atmosphere is less likely to revolve around varsity games.

Ohio State has a large, participatory sports culture. Football game days, tailgates, the marching band’s Script Ohio, Skull Session, and singing “Carmen Ohio” are major shared rituals, even for students who are not serious sports fans. Carnegie Mellon can still offer strong belonging and memorable traditions, but its spirit feels more quirky, community-specific, and academically or creatively driven than athletic.
