Which is stronger for undergraduate psychology: the University of Virginia or Wake Forest University?

For undergraduate psychology with graduate school in mind, the University of Virginia has the edge because it offers a larger psychology research ecosystem, more adjacent fields to explore, and especially broad opportunities at a major research university.

At UVA, it is more feasible to sample multiple research labs and specialized courses before committing to an area such as clinical psychology, cognition, behavioral neuroscience, or developmental science. Its larger scale can also mean more research activity, though students need to be proactive about approaching faculty and applying for lab positions early.

Wake Forest’s main advantage is its smaller undergraduate environment. Psychology students may find closer day-to-day access to professors, smaller classes, and more individualized mentoring, which can be valuable for earning strong recommendation letters and completing substantial research. A motivated student who builds relationships early could be very well prepared for graduate study.
