New York also makes semester-time internships, industry talks, startup involvement, and connections in areas such as fintech, media, and health technology more accessible. Both schools recruit well for technology roles, but Columbia’s location can make it easier to build a local professional network while enrolled.

For an AI career centered on deep technical training and research, Carnegie Mellon is the stronger choice. Choose Columbia instead only if its New York setting, wider academic mix, and ability to connect AI with other fields are meaningful priorities that outweigh CMU’s more specialized AI infrastructure.
