Start with the four-year net cost shown in each financial-aid offer, not the published price. Include expected annual family contribution, federal loans, any parent borrowing, travel, health insurance, and likely increases in living expenses. A modest difference can be manageable; a large gap financed primarily through loans can change what majors, graduate programs, internships, or first jobs are realistic after college.

Then ask what you would actually use. Brown may justify a higher cost for a student energized by independent course design, interdisciplinary work, undergraduate research, and a less prescriptive academic culture. Vanderbilt may justify its cost for someone who values a more traditional campus community, school spirit, accessible advising structure, and the professional access that comes with Nashville. For pre-med or graduate-school plans, minimizing undergraduate debt deserves extra weight because additional education can be expensive.
