How does the student workload at Brown compare with UChicago?

UChicago tends to feel more consistently demanding because nearly every student moves through a substantial Core Curriculum alongside their major, with frequent reading, discussion preparation, writing, and analytical problem-solving. Brown can be just as rigorous course by course, but its Open Curriculum gives students much more control over how many intensive classes they take at once and whether they balance them with exploratory or lighter-credit commitments. A student who likes a structured, ideas-centered academic culture and expects school to be a major part of daily life may find UChicago energizing. A student who wants serious academics with greater ownership over pacing and course selection may feel more at home at Brown.

At UChicago, humanities and social-science Core sequences often require close reading of difficult texts, regular seminar participation, and essays or response papers. STEM students also face demanding problem sets, labs, and math-based courses, while still carrying Core requirements. The workload is not necessarily nonstop in every class, but the combination can make a normal week feel dense, especially during paper, exam, and problem-set deadlines.
