Is Northeastern worth the extra cost compared with Ohio State?

For most students, Northeastern is not worth a significantly higher family cost than Ohio State solely for co-op; choose Northeastern only if the added cost is comfortably manageable and its specific co-op structure is central to your goals. Northeastern’s signature advantage is a deeply built-in co-op system, where many students complete full-time, typically paid work terms that can provide substantial experience before graduation. That structure can be especially valuable in fields such as business, engineering, computer science, design, and health-related industries.

The financial comparison matters more than the label. Co-op pay can offset some living expenses, but it should not be treated as guaranteed tuition coverage, and it will rarely erase a large multiyear price gap. Taking on substantial loans for Northeastern can limit the benefit of entering the workforce with additional experience, particularly when Ohio State leaves you with much less debt.

Ohio State offers strong internship access of its own, including through its large alumni network, career services, major employers in Columbus, and connections in fields like technology, finance, research, healthcare, and engineering. Its internships may require more self-directed searching and scheduling around classes than Northeastern’s formal co-op cycles, but motivated students can still graduate with multiple relevant experiences.

Compare the net four-year cost after grants, not the sticker price, and examine your intended major’s co-op participation, typical placements, and whether co-op would extend your graduation timeline. A modest premium for Northeastern may be reasonable for a student who will actively use co-op and can avoid heavy borrowing. A major gap favors Ohio State, where disciplined internship planning can produce a similarly employable résumé at a far safer financial cost.
