The biggest practical difference is that NYU builds semester-long study abroad into a network of its own global academic centers, while Northeastern offers a broader mix of external partner programs and shorter global experiences that students often fit around co-op. For a student whose priority is spending a full semester abroad with a relatively straightforward, NYU-run option, NYU has the clearer advantage.

NYU students can study at many global sites while remaining enrolled at NYU, and the university’s curriculum is designed to make a semester away workable for many majors. That does not mean every location or course sequence works equally well, especially in tightly structured programs, but semester abroad is a central and visible part of the NYU experience.

Northeastern also has substantial international options, including semester and year programs through approved providers and university partners. Its distinctive strength is flexibility: students can combine a traditional semester abroad with Dialogue of Civilizations faculty-led programs, international co-ops, research, or other global experiences.
