How does the undergraduate workload compare between Stanford and the University of Chicago?

I’m a high school senior choosing between Stanford and UChicago, and academic workload is a major factor for me. I’m trying to understand how the typical time commitment, reading, problem sets, and overall academic intensity compare at the undergraduate level.

Both schools are academically demanding, but UChicago more often feels like a sustained, discussion- and reading-centered intellectual grind, while Stanford tends to feel faster-moving and more balanced by its quarter calendar and campus culture. Its quarter system means classes move quickly: a missed week can matter, midterms may arrive early, and STEM problem sets can be demanding. Still, the campus has a reputation for collaboration rather than competition, and students often have more latitude to shape a schedule around their priorities. Stanford’s engineering, computer science, pre-med, and math courses can be extremely time-consuming, so it should not be treated as an easier academic option.

For either school, major matters more than the school name alone. A humanities or social-science student at UChicago will likely encounter more required reading and writing than a comparable Stanford student; a Stanford student in a technical sequence may spend as many or more hours on coding, labs, and problem sets. The most meaningful distinction is that UChicago places the Core at the center of the undergraduate experience, whereas Stanford more readily lets students build an intense or more diversified workload around their individual goals.
