Is Boston University or Carnegie Mellon University generally considered more prestigious?

The biggest practical difference is that Carnegie Mellon has a more concentrated, high-intensity reputation in technical and creative disciplines, while Boston University is known as a broad, major urban research university with strength across many professional and liberal-arts fields. CMU’s name carries especially strong weight in computer science, engineering, robotics, design, drama, and quantitative fields. BU has wide national and international recognition, particularly through its Boston location, large academic footprint, communications, business, health-related programs, and research activity.

Apart from a student’s particular major, Carnegie Mellon is typically viewed as having the somewhat stronger overall prestige signal in academic and employer circles. Its reputation for selectivity, specialized excellence, and rigorous undergraduate training tends to create that perception, even among people outside its best-known departments.

That does not mean BU is viewed as a lesser-quality education or that its degree lacks recognition. BU is a well-regarded institution with a large alumni network and substantial visibility, especially in the Northeast and in fields connected to media, business, public relations, health, and international work. But for the narrow question of overall perceived prestige, Carnegie Mellon would usually be the answer.
