Is Vanderbilt harder to get into than Florida State?

The biggest practical difference is that Vanderbilt draws an exceptionally selective national and international applicant pool, while Florida State is a large public university whose admissions process also serves many Florida residents. Vanderbilt’s applicant pool tends to include students with near-top academic records, demanding coursework, and substantial extracurricular distinction. Florida State is selective as well, especially for out-of-state applicants, but admission is typically more attainable than at Vanderbilt.

Strong grades, rigorous classes, and high test scores are common among Vanderbilt applicants, so those credentials alone do not ensure admission. Its review also places meaningful weight on essays, recommendations, activities, and the distinction a student brings to the class.
