Is Williams a viable option for graduate school compared with Vanderbilt?

For graduate study itself, Vanderbilt is the viable option by a wide margin; Williams is primarily an undergraduate liberal arts college with only a small number of specialized master’s programs. Vanderbilt operates broad graduate and professional schools across fields such as arts and science, engineering, education, business, law, medicine, nursing, and divinity, so it can support many different graduate-level paths.

For a high school senior choosing an undergraduate college before applying elsewhere for graduate school, Williams can still be an excellent launch point. Its small classes, close faculty mentorship, and substantial undergraduate research and thesis opportunities can make it strong preparation for Ph.D., law, medical, and other graduate programs. But you would attend Williams for the undergraduate experience and then apply to graduate programs at other universities.

Vanderbilt makes more sense if you want the possibility of continuing at the same institution into a wide range of graduate or professional programs, or if you want an undergraduate environment connected to a larger research-university and professional-school network. Williams makes sense when the appeal is an intensive undergraduate liberal arts education, not a broad menu of graduate degrees.
