How do the campus settings of Northwestern and Cornell compare?

Northwestern suits students who want a traditional residential campus while remaining closely connected to a major city. Its Evanston campus sits directly on Lake Michigan, blends into a walkable suburban downtown, and has easy public-transit access to Chicago. You can get coffee, groceries, restaurants, and lakefront paths without feeling isolated, then reach city neighborhoods, museums, internships, and events without needing a car.

Evanston does not feel like downtown Chicago, though. Northwestern’s core is cohesive and campus-centered, with quads, academic buildings, residence halls, and a distinct student community; the urban energy is nearby rather than constant. The lakefront is a major part of daily life, especially in warmer months, and the terrain is mostly flat.

Cornell fits students who want a more immersive, self-contained college environment surrounded by nature. Its Ithaca campus is set on dramatic hills above Cayuga Lake, with gorges, waterfalls, wooded areas, and substantial elevation changes built into ordinary walks across campus. Ithaca has a lively small-city and college-town character, particularly around Collegetown and the Commons, but it is not a suburb of a large metropolitan area.

Cornell can feel more rural and physically expansive than Northwestern, even though Ithaca provides restaurants, bookstores, local events, and off-campus housing. Students often spend more of their social and academic lives within the Cornell-Ithaca bubble, while Northwestern students can more readily make Chicago part of their routine. Choose Northwestern if access to an urban area and a lakeside suburban setting matter most; Cornell offers a more scenic, secluded, outdoors-oriented campus experience.
