Is Yale generally harder to get into than Northwestern for undergraduate admission?

The biggest practical difference is that Yale sits in the small group of colleges where even exceptionally qualified applicants face an unusually unpredictable outcome, while Northwestern is also highly selective but offers a somewhat less compressed admissions environment overall. Yale’s global name recognition and very limited entering class draw an enormous number of top academic applicants each year. Northwestern attracts an equally strong pool in many areas, especially journalism, engineering, theater, music, and the sciences, but its applicant demand is not quite as extreme across the board.

For a student applying without a major-specific distinction, both should be treated as reaches. Strong grades, rigorous coursework, meaningful activities, recommendations, and essays are necessary at either school, but none can make admission predictable.
