Is Yale or Georgetown better for studying international relations?

For a student who wants international relations to shape nearly every part of college, Georgetown is often the more direct fit. Its School of Foreign Service is built specifically around global affairs. Its Washington, D.C., location also makes semester- and school-year opportunities with embassies, federal agencies, policy organizations, and international institutions unusually accessible.

Georgetown particularly suits someone who is already drawn to policy practice, diplomacy, security, regional studies, or public service and wants a highly international cohort. The academic culture is preprofessional in a productive way: classmates often arrive with strong interests in government, foreign policy, and global careers.

Yale may appeal more to a student who wants to study international affairs through a broader liberal-arts education and keep more room to combine it with history, economics, political science, languages, environmental studies, or quantitative work. Yale’s Global Affairs major emphasizes interdisciplinary study and offers access to faculty and research on major international questions. Yale also has substantial language offerings, globally focused research, and a residential-college environment that can feel less career-directed day to day than Georgetown’s SFS.

For diplomacy or international policy, neither choice closes doors. Georgetown offers the clearer undergraduate pipeline into Washington-based policy experience during the academic year. Yale offers a strong platform for students who want rigorous academic exploration, research, and intellectual flexibility before deciding whether their path leads to diplomacy, graduate school, law, development, journalism, or another international field.
