Is Texas A&M or UCLA harder to get into?

The biggest practical difference is that Texas A&M has a much larger undergraduate intake and a major automatic-admission pathway for top Texas students, while UCLA uses an intensely competitive comprehensive review. For most applicants, UCLA is substantially harder to get into. UCLA also does not consider SAT or ACT scores, so grades, course rigor, activities, and written responses carry particular weight.

At Texas A&M, Texas students who graduate in the top 10% of their high school class are generally entitled to admission under the state’s automatic-admission law, subject to university policies and major placement rules. Applicants outside that group still face meaningful competition, especially for engineering, business-related pathways, and other high-demand programs, but the overall university is more accessible than UCLA. Texas residency can be a significant advantage at A&M because of that state-based framework.

UCLA is highly selective for both California residents and nonresidents, and admission is not guaranteed by class rank. Applicants are evaluated in the context of their school and opportunities, but UCLA receives an exceptionally deep pool of students with top grades and demanding coursework. Certain majors, including engineering and computer science-related fields, can make the competition feel even tighter.

So, in a general head-to-head comparison, UCLA is harder to get into than Texas A&M. A Texas student in the top 10% may have a particularly clear admissions route to A&M, whereas UCLA should be treated as a reach for almost every applicant, including students with excellent academic records.
