How do UIUC and Ohio State compare in campus size and overall feel?

I’m a high school senior comparing UIUC and Ohio State, and I’m trying to picture what daily life would feel like at each campus. I’m especially interested in how their physical size and layout affect whether they feel compact and walkable or large and spread out.

For daily life, Ohio State tends to feel denser and more urban, while UIUC feels flatter, more open, and more like a self-contained college town. Both have large student populations and campuses that require real walking, but neither makes a car necessary for ordinary academic life. Ohio State’s main campus sits directly beside Columbus neighborhoods, whereas UIUC stretches across the boundary between Champaign and Urbana.

Ohio State’s academic core is relatively compact and busy, with major classroom buildings, residence halls, libraries, dining, and the Oval clustered within a walkable central area. High Street along the campus edge adds restaurants, stores, apartments, traffic, and city energy, so the transition from campus to Columbus can feel seamless. The footprint is still substantial, though: reaching some facilities, the medical center, athletic areas, or far-north buildings can mean a noticeably longer walk or a bus ride.

UIUC’s central Quad is also highly walkable, but the campus layout feels more spacious because it is very flat, grid-based, and spread along broad streets. The major academic areas extend beyond the Quad toward Engineering, the South Campus research and athletic zone, and Urbana, so students often use the MTD bus system or bikes for trips across campus. Champaign’s Campustown provides a lively commercial strip, but UIUC has less of the immediately urban, big-city feel that Ohio State gets from being embedded in Columbus.
