Is Arizona State a better choice than UIUC for warm-weather campus life?

I’m deciding between UIUC and Arizona State, and the day-to-day campus environment matters a lot to me. I’m especially drawn to outdoor activities, spending time outside with friends, and having warm weather for most of the school year. How different are the two schools in terms of the overall campus experience related to weather?

The biggest practical tradeoff is that Arizona State offers far more reliably warm, usable outdoor weather during the academic year, while UIUC gives you a traditional four-season campus experience with a much longer stretch of cold weather. At ASU’s Tempe campus, patios, pools, outdoor dining, walking around campus, and casual meetups outside can be part of daily life through much of fall, winter, and spring. The catch is that late-summer and early-fall desert heat can be intense enough that students plan outdoor activities for mornings, evenings, or air-conditioned spaces.

UIUC’s Urbana-Champaign campus is notably greener and has a classic residential college feel, especially during early fall and late spring. Those seasons can be excellent for quads, campus events, and outdoor social life, but winter is real: cold temperatures, wind, and snow can make everyday hanging out outdoors much less appealing for a substantial part of the year. Students still have active campus life, but it shifts more toward residence halls, student organizations, libraries, and indoor venues.

For the weather-centered experience you describe, Arizona State is the more fitting choice. Its winter and spring climate is especially conducive to being outside with friends, and the Phoenix-area setting adds easy access to desert hikes, parks, and outdoor recreation. Choose UIUC only if you also value seasonal change and are comfortable accepting that outdoor campus life will be much more limited during winter.
