How do Georgetown and UC Berkeley compare for undergraduate computer science?

I’m a high school senior deciding between Georgetown and UC Berkeley, and I’m interested in majoring in computer science. I’m trying to understand how the two schools compare academically for CS before making my decision.

For a student who wants the deepest undergraduate CS ecosystem, extensive advanced coursework, and proximity to a major technology and startup market, UC Berkeley is the more compelling academic choice.

Berkeley also offers a far larger CS peer community and denser recruiting connections, especially on the West Coast. The tradeoff is scale: introductory and popular upper-division courses can be large, and students often need to take initiative to build relationships with professors, find research roles, and navigate high demand for opportunities.

Georgetown fits a student who wants to study computer science in a smaller, more personal liberal-arts environment while retaining substantial exposure to writing, ethics, policy, and other disciplines through its Core Curriculum. Its Washington, DC location is especially valuable for interests such as cybersecurity, government technology, public-interest tech, digital policy, and work connected to federal agencies or nonprofits.

Georgetown’s CS program can provide a solid technical foundation, but it has less of the sheer course breadth, research scale, and tech-industry concentration that Berkeley offers. At Georgetown, a student interested in the social consequences of computing or in combining CS with government, international affairs, business, or philosophy may find the overall education especially coherent. For a student whose priority is maximum technical specialization and immersion in a large CS community, Berkeley has the clearer edge.
