Which university offers stronger undergraduate research opportunities, UT Austin or UCLA?

I’m a high school senior deciding between the University of Texas at Austin and UCLA, and I’m especially interested in getting involved in research as an undergraduate. I’m considering majors in biology or a related field and want to understand which school generally provides better access to faculty labs, research programs, and meaningful opportunities for undergraduates.

The biggest practical difference is that UT Austin offers a more structured on-ramp into research early in college through the Freshman Research Initiative, while UCLA offers a larger and especially deep biomedical research ecosystem but can require more self-directed outreach to join a lab. For a biology-related major, UCLA’s life-sciences departments, medical school, health system, and many affiliated research institutes create an unusually broad range of lab options. UT Austin also has major strengths in biology, neuroscience, molecular biosciences, and public health, with substantial faculty research across campus.

At UT Austin, the Freshman Research Initiative is a notable advantage for students who want a defined path into authentic research rather than having to cold-email professors immediately. Students work in research streams led by faculty and research educators, often beginning in their first year, and can build skills and connections that lead to later lab positions. The College of Natural Sciences also supports undergraduate research, honors thesis work, and faculty-mentored projects.

At UCLA, undergraduates can pursue research through the Undergraduate Research Center, departmental programs, course credit, summer opportunities, and direct faculty contact. Biology students have access to labs spanning genetics, ecology and evolution, neuroscience, immunology, cancer biology, computational biology, and translational medicine. The scale of UCLA’s biomedical enterprise can be particularly valuable for a student who already has a narrow scientific interest or hopes to connect lab work with clinical or health-related research.

For most students focused on biology, UCLA has the stronger overall ceiling for the breadth and depth of undergraduate research, especially in biomedical fields. UT Austin may be the more reliable choice for gaining meaningful research experience early, particularly for a student who values the Freshman Research Initiative’s built-in structure and mentoring.
