Which offers better undergraduate teaching: the University of Miami or Colby College?

For undergraduate teaching and day-to-day professor access, Colby College has the clearer advantage. As a small liberal arts college focused entirely on undergraduates, Colby is structured around discussion-based courses, close advising, and faculty who regularly teach students from the introductory level onward. The University of Miami can provide excellent instruction, especially in smaller programs and upper-level courses, but the experience is less uniformly intimate across the university.

Colby’s academic model makes personal interaction part of the normal classroom experience rather than something students must seek out. Many courses are small, and professors are likely to know students’ interests, writing, and progress over several semesters. Because Colby does not have a large graduate student population, undergraduates also have more direct access to faculty for research, mentorship, and office-hour conversations.

Miami is a larger research university with a wider array of majors, professional pathways, laboratories, and course options. That breadth is valuable, but some introductory classes, particularly in high-demand STEM, business, and pre-health sequences, can be larger and may include teaching assistants. Students who are proactive can still build strong faculty relationships there, particularly through honors courses, research groups, and major-specific departments.

For a student whose first priority is consistently accessible professors and close classroom instruction across four years, Colby’s smaller undergraduate-centered environment is more likely to deliver that experience.
