Which is better for computer science: the University of Miami or UIC?

The biggest practical tradeoff is that UIC places you in Chicago’s much larger year-round technology and employer market, while the University of Miami offers a smaller private-campus experience and a more residential college environment in South Florida. For a student focused specifically on software-development internships, UIC’s location can make it easier to pursue internships, part-time technical work, meetups, and employer events during the academic year rather than only in the summer. UIC also has a sizable engineering and computing presence, which can create more course options and peer connections across technical fields.

The University of Miami can still prepare you very well for software development. Its computer science program provides the core preparation employers expect, including programming, algorithms, systems-oriented coursework, and project work, and its private-school setting may offer more individualized access to professors and campus resources. Miami’s South Florida location also has opportunities in finance, healthcare, startups, and technology, though students may need to be more deliberate about building connections beyond campus.

Cost should carry real weight here. If UIC is substantially less expensive after scholarships and aid, that difference makes UIC especially compelling, since reducing debt gives you more flexibility to take internships, relocate for a first job, or pursue graduate school. At either school, your internship results will depend heavily on completing projects, practicing technical interviews, using career services early, and applying broadly from first year onward.

For the narrow goal of maximizing access to software-development internships and a broad urban employer network, I would lean toward UIC, particularly if its net price is lower. Choose Miami over UIC only if its financial package is comparable and you strongly prefer its campus setting, smaller private-university feel, and the personal environment where you believe you will be more engaged and successful.
