Is the University of Maryland or the University of Miami better for computer science?

For computer science specifically, the University of Maryland is the more compelling choice for most students. Maryland has a larger, more established CS ecosystem, with extensive course offerings and research across areas such as AI, cybersecurity, systems, data science, and machine learning. Its College Park location also puts students near major technology, government, defense, and research employers in the Washington, D.C., and Baltimore corridor.

Maryland’s scale matters academically: CS students can find more specialized electives, research labs, student organizations, hackathons, and peers pursuing technical careers. The university has particularly strong connections to federal agencies, federally funded research, and employers that recruit for software engineering, cybersecurity, data, and technical consulting roles. Those connections can be valuable for internships during the school year as well as summer opportunities.

The University of Miami can still be a good place to study CS, especially for someone who prefers a smaller private-university environment, closer faculty access, and the Miami location. Its CS program offers solid foundations and interdisciplinary possibilities, including applications in business, health, and entrepreneurship. However, it does not have the same breadth or depth of CS-focused infrastructure and regional technical recruiting as Maryland.

Cost and residency could change the decision substantially. Maryland is particularly hard to pass up for an in-state student because of its CS reputation and access to the D.C. tech market, while Miami may be more attractive if its financial aid package is significantly better or if its campus environment is a major personal priority.
