Which is better for undergraduate journalism: UMD or Northwestern?

For an aspiring reporter, Northwestern offers the stronger overall undergraduate journalism preparation because Medill provides a more intensive, journalism-centered curriculum and a particularly deep alumni network in national newsrooms. Its reporting education is built around hands-on, beat-based work rather than treating journalism primarily as one major within a larger communications structure. Northwestern students also benefit from access to Chicago, a major media market with opportunities across local, regional, and national outlets.

Medill’s journalism program places substantial emphasis on reporting, writing, editing, multimedia production, data and audience work, and professional newsroom expectations. The school’s quarter system can also allow students to take more distinct courses and pursue specialized areas such as investigative reporting, politics, social issues, or digital storytelling. For a student who is already confident that journalism is the central academic goal, that concentration can be valuable.

Maryland’s Philip Merrill College of Journalism is still an excellent choice, particularly for students drawn to political reporting, public-policy journalism, or government accountability. Its location near Washington, D.C. creates unusually direct access to federal agencies, Congress, advocacy organizations, and political media, while Capital News Service gives students practical reporting opportunities. Maryland may also be the more sensible decision if it comes with a meaningfully lower cost, since early-career journalism salaries can make debt a serious consideration.
