Is the University of Maryland or George Washington University better for studying public policy?

For an undergraduate focused on public policy, George Washington University offers the more immersive overall experience because its Foggy Bottom campus places students in the center of Washington, D.C. Federal agencies, congressional offices, think tanks, advocacy organizations, and international institutions are accessible during the academic year, not just through summer programs. That proximity makes it easier to build policy-related work experience alongside classes.

Government access is GW’s clearest advantage. Being close to Capitol Hill, the White House area, federal departments, and major nonprofit headquarters can make networking and informational interviews more practical, particularly for interests such as federal policy, international affairs, health policy, or advocacy.

The University of Maryland has a respected School of Public Policy, strong faculty research, and meaningful access to both Washington and Maryland state government. It may be the more sensible choice for an in-state student, someone seeking a larger traditional campus, or a student interested in state and local policy connections through Annapolis. But for day-to-day exposure to national policy institutions and the ability to integrate internships into the semester, GW has the edge.
