Put the actual four-year net price at the top of your comparison. Include tuition, housing, travel, health insurance, and the likelihood that grants or scholarships renew each year. If UF is substantially less expensive, that margin can matter more than small differences in prestige or amenities, particularly if you may pursue graduate or professional school. UNC’s out-of-state cost can be difficult to justify unless the price gap is manageable for your family or UNC offers a distinctive program or opportunity you would genuinely use.

Then compare your intended academic path at the department level. Look at course sequences, undergraduate research, advising, study-abroad options, and access to internships for your likely major. UNC may feel especially compelling for students drawn to the Triangle’s concentration of health care, technology, policy, and research organizations. UF has deep strengths across STEM, business, agriculture, health-related fields, and Florida-focused professional connections, while Gainesville offers a more self-contained college-town experience.

Consider climate, distance from home, transportation, and whether you prefer Chapel Hill’s proximity to Durham and Raleigh or Gainesville’s more campus-centered environment. Where would you be happiest on an ordinary Tuesday, not just at a game or admitted-student event?

Choose UF if it leaves you meaningfully less debt or you see yourself building a career in Florida and enjoy a classic, highly campus-centered university environment. Choose UNC-Chapel Hill if its academic offerings align more closely with your goals and you are excited by the Research Triangle setting enough to justify any added cost.
