Is the University of Florida or Purdue better for an undergraduate mathematics major?

Purdue has a modest edge for an undergraduate mathematics major, especially if you want extensive upper-level options and a math program closely connected to engineering, computer science, and statistics. Its Department of Mathematics supports substantial coursework across pure mathematics, applied mathematics, probability, numerical analysis, and actuarial preparation. University of Florida is also a strong choice, but Purdue’s broader technical ecosystem tends to create more pathways for a math student to explore applications alongside theory.

For course depth, Purdue is particularly attractive because mathematics students can build toward advanced work in areas such as algebra, analysis, topology, differential equations, optimization, and computational mathematics while drawing on related departments. That flexibility matters for students who may later consider graduate school, quantitative careers, data-oriented work, or engineering-adjacent applications. UF offers solid preparation in both pure and applied math, but Purdue’s concentration of STEM programs gives its math curriculum an unusually practical range.

For professor access and research, both universities require initiative. At Purdue, a large research faculty and the university’s technical focus can make it easier to find projects that connect mathematics with scientific computing, modeling, operations research, or other disciplines. At UF, students can also pursue faculty research, directed study, and honors-level work, particularly by building relationships early through office hours and smaller upper-division classes.

The main reason to choose UF instead would be a major financial advantage, especially in-state tuition, or a stronger preference for its campus environment. But based strictly on mathematics course depth and the range of professor-led, STEM-connected opportunities, Purdue is the more compelling program.
