Choose the University of Florida unless you already know you want Purdue’s especially engineering- and technology-centered academic environment. UF offers a more traditional residential college experience in Gainesville, with a broad range of strong programs, major athletics, and a campus culture that tends to feel more socially unified. Purdue is an excellent choice, but its biggest distinctive advantage is the depth of its STEM ecosystem and its practical, industry-connected academic culture.

The academic question should carry the most weight. Purdue is particularly compelling for engineering, computer science, aviation, technology, and certain quantitative fields because those disciplines are central to the university’s identity, recruiting pipeline, facilities, and peer culture. UF is academically strong across STEM as well as business, health-related fields, the sciences, liberal arts, journalism, and public policy, so it can be a better place for a student who is still exploring or wants a less narrowly technical campus atmosphere.

Campus setting is a meaningful difference. UF is in Gainesville, a lively college town with warm weather, a large sports presence, and a more classic Southeastern university feel. Purdue’s West Lafayette campus has a strong student community and plenty to do on campus, but the social rhythm is often more academically and professionally focused; winters are also a real factor for students coming from warmer climates.

Compare the net price carefully, especially tuition, housing, travel, and any scholarships. For a Florida resident, UF can be an unusually strong value. If the financial gap is modest, the deciding factor should be whether you would be energized by Purdue’s STEM-intensive, career-oriented culture or by UF’s broader campus experience and academic flexibility.
