How do CMU and Caltech compare for undergraduate research opportunities?

I’m a high school senior interested in studying computer science and possibly doing research as an undergraduate. I’m deciding between Carnegie Mellon and Caltech, and research access is one of my biggest factors. How do the two schools generally compare in terms of how easily undergraduates can get involved in faculty research?

The main tradeoff is breadth versus proximity: Carnegie Mellon offers a much larger computer science research ecosystem and more specialized labs, while Caltech’s very small undergraduate population can make faculty relationships and early lab access feel more direct. For someone drawn to a close-knit, science-heavy environment and the prospect of sustained mentorship with a small faculty community, Caltech can offer more immediate access. On research access alone, Caltech may feel easier to enter early; on the range and depth of CS research available over four years, CMU has the edge.
