Is MIT or the University of Illinois More Affordable After Financial Aid?

The biggest practical tradeoff is that MIT’s need-based aid can make a very high sticker price unexpectedly low, while UIUC’s affordability depends much more on whether you qualify for Illinois resident pricing and receive a competitive scholarship. MIT meets 100% of demonstrated financial need for admitted students. UIUC does not promise to meet every admitted student’s full demonstrated need, and its merit awards are limited and competitive.

For an Illinois resident, UIUC starts with a substantially lower published cost than MIT. An in-state student who receives Illinois Commitment support or a major UIUC scholarship may pay less than at MIT, particularly if their family does not qualify for much MIT need-based aid.

For an out-of-state student, the comparison often shifts. UIUC’s nonresident tuition is much higher, and its institutional need-based aid is less comprehensive than MIT’s. A family with significant demonstrated need will often find MIT comparable in cost to, or less expensive than, out-of-state UIUC after aid.

UIUC is often the lower-cost option for Illinois residents with modest aid eligibility, while MIT is frequently more affordable for students with substantial financial need, especially those applying to UIUC from outside Illinois. Compare each school’s net price calculator using the same current family income, assets, and household information; that estimate is far more useful than either school’s listed cost of attendance.
