For most students seeking a cohesive, traditional college community while retaining city access, Northwestern’s Evanston location offers the more comfortable day-to-day student experience. Its lakeside campus is physically distinct from Chicago, residences and academic buildings sit within a concentrated walkable area, and students can reach downtown Chicago by CTA train when they want internships, restaurants, events, or nightlife. Columbia offers a far more immediate New York immersion, but it feels less like a self-contained campus.

At Columbia, Morningside Heights provides a recognizable campus core around Low Library, Butler Library, and College Walk, yet students step directly into Manhattan’s density. That means extraordinary access to museums, performances, neighborhoods, employers, and public transit, often without needing to plan a separate trip into the city. The tradeoff is that housing, studying, socializing, and navigating crowds can feel more urban and dispersed, and many students experience New York as an active part of their schedule rather than an occasional outlet.

Northwestern’s Evanston setting makes spontaneous campus life easier: classmates are more likely to live nearby, gather at campus events, spend time on the lakefront, and build routines centered on the university. Evanston itself has coffee shops, restaurants, and essentials within walking distance, so students do not need Chicago for every off-campus need. Chicago is accessible enough to expand opportunities, but far enough away that the campus can preserve a calmer rhythm.
