Is Stevens or Northwestern better for living near New York City?

The practical tradeoff is immediate, everyday access to Manhattan at Stevens versus a residential campus experience in Evanston, outside Chicago, at Northwestern. Stevens is in Hoboken directly across the Hudson River from New York City, while Northwestern is not a realistic option for frequent city visits during the school year. For someone who wants New York to function as part of their weekly college life, location alone creates a major difference.

From Stevens, students can use the PATH train from Hoboken to the World Trade Center area or to midtown connections, take the ferry, or use commuter rail and buses. Many Manhattan neighborhoods, internships, cultural events, and airports are accessible without needing a car or an overnight trip. Hoboken itself also has a walkable, lively waterfront setting, though it feels much smaller and more compact than New York.

Northwestern offers easy access to Chicago via the CTA Purple Line and Metra, so it provides a strong big-city connection, just to a different city. Trips to New York from Evanston would normally mean flying from the Chicago area or taking a long-distance train, making them better suited to breaks rather than spontaneous weekends.

For living near and regularly using New York City, Stevens is decisively the more convenient choice. Northwestern would make sense only if its academic and campus advantages outweigh the importance of being physically close to NYC.
