Is Northeastern or RPI more social outside of class?

Northeastern is likely to feel more social outside class for most students, largely because its Boston location creates far more built-in options for events, restaurants, concerts, sports, neighborhoods, and internships with friends. The university also has a larger, more varied student body and an active club scene, so meeting people through organizations, residence halls, campus events, and city activities tends to be relatively easy.

Its co-op system does change the rhythm of social life: students’ schedules can diverge when some friends are on co-op while others are taking classes. Still, co-op often expands students’ networks, and Boston makes it easy to maintain an active life beyond campus rather than relying only on university programming.

RPI can be social, but the experience is more campus-centered and often more dependent on taking initiative. Its smaller, heavily STEM-oriented community can make it easier to recognize people, form close friend groups, and connect through project teams, gaming, Greek life, clubs, and traditions. Troy has local restaurants and activities, but it does not provide the same depth of nearby social options as Boston.

For a student who wants frequent variety and the ability to make spontaneous plans off campus, Northeastern has the clearer advantage. RPI may appeal more to someone who prefers a tighter-knit, nerdier, residence-hall-and-club-based social scene over a city-driven one.
