Its residential Evanston campus, lakefront setting, student traditions, Greek life, performances, and Big Ten sports create frequent reasons for students to gather without needing to plan a trip into the city. You can still reach Chicago easily, but most friendships and weekend activity can begin right on or near campus.

Northwestern’s campus layout matters: many students live close to one another, eat in the same dining spaces, attend the same events, and socialize around campus neighborhoods. That can make spontaneous plans, dorm hangouts, club events, games, and late-night food a regular part of the experience. Evanston also has restaurants and cafés that feel oriented toward student life rather than tourism or professional work.

Columbia offers a different kind of fun: access to New York City is extraordinary. Students can go to concerts, museums, comedy shows, restaurants, parks, internships, and neighborhoods that no enclosed campus can replicate. Morningside Heights has a real campus center, but the social scene is more urban and self-directed; friends may scatter across the city, and activities often require more money, transit time, and advance coordination.

Columbia’s intense academic culture and Core Curriculum can also make students feel especially busy, although the shared classes can create close friendships. Choose Columbia if your idea of fun is using New York as your playground. Choose Northwestern if you want a more cohesive campus community where social opportunities are easier to stumble into every week.
