Is USC or Boston College generally harder to get into?

The biggest practical difference is that USC draws a much larger, highly national applicant pool across a wide range of programs, while Boston College’s process is shaped more by its smaller undergraduate size, Jesuit identity, and meaningful Early Decision interest. Both are highly selective, but USC is typically the more difficult school to enter overall.

USC’s applicant volume is exceptionally high, and several of its schools and majors, especially in business, engineering, cinematic arts, and popular arts programs, can be even more selective than the university-wide result suggests. USC also offers many academic paths, but applicants are competing for limited space in a very large national and international pool.

Boston College is not an easier “safety” by any measure. It places substantial value on academic rigor, strong writing, service or community engagement, and evidence that an applicant fits its mission and campus culture. Its Early Decision rounds can be an important factor for students who are certain BC is their first choice, whereas USC does not use binding Early Decision.

For a student applying in the regular cycle without a major admissions hook, USC is generally the harder admit. The gap is not so large that a student should treat Boston College casually: an applicant competitive for one may be denied by either, particularly in crowded academic areas.
