Is USC or UCLA generally more selective for undergraduate admission?

UCLA is generally viewed as slightly more selective for undergraduate admission overall, though the difference is narrow and can shift by applicant pool and major. UCLA’s large volume of applications, highly constrained space in popular programs, and California public-university context make admission especially competitive.

For a student applying to UCLA, academic performance in a rigorous high-school curriculum carries particular weight, and the UC application does not use SAT or ACT scores in admission.

USC is similarly highly selective, but it can be a somewhat different fit for applicants whose strengths show through sustained extracurricular leadership, creative work, entrepreneurship, research, or a clear connection to a specific USC school or program. USC’s private-university admissions process can also make demonstrated accomplishments outside the classroom feel especially important, depending on the program.
