I am deciding between NYU Law and Notre Dame Law and hope to practice in New York after graduation. I want to understand which school’s reputation, alumni network, and recruiting connections are generally stronger in the New York legal market.

The biggest practical difference is that NYU Law places you inside the New York legal market for all three years, while Notre Dame Law can reach New York but requires more intentional networking and job-search planning from South Bend. NYU’s recruiting calendar, alumni presence, clinics, adjunct faculty, and school-year opportunities are deeply embedded in New York City. Notre Dame has a respected national name and a loyal alumni community, but its most concentrated on-campus recruiting relationships are not as New York-centered.

For New York BigLaw, NYU has the clearer advantage. Major New York firms recruit heavily at NYU, and students can build relationships through networking events, semester-time internships, and alumni contacts without having to travel or rely primarily on summer recruiting. Its reputation in the city is especially strong across large-firm practice, public-interest law, international law, tax, and many other fields.

Notre Dame Law can absolutely lead to New York firms and other New York legal jobs, particularly for students with strong grades, clear geographic ties, and a proactive approach to networking. Its alumni are often notably responsive, and the school’s smaller community may offer more individualized support. Still, a Notre Dame student seeking New York should expect to explain that goal early, target New York employers deliberately, and spend more effort developing local connections.

If your goal is specifically to begin and build your career in New York, NYU Law is the more direct and powerful platform. Notre Dame becomes more compelling if its cost is substantially lower or if you strongly prefer its culture and are comfortable taking a less automatic path into the New York market.
