Which is stronger for undergraduate humanities: Northwestern or UChicago?

For a student primarily seeking the strongest undergraduate humanities environment in history and English, the University of Chicago has the clearer edge. Its undergraduate experience is built around an unusually intensive Core curriculum, which keeps literature, philosophy, history, and close textual analysis central even outside the major. UChicago also has a particularly strong campus culture of seminar discussion and academic inquiry that tends to appeal to students who want humanities to shape their whole college experience.

The Core is the most important differentiator. Rather than completing a small set of broad distribution requirements, UChicago students take a substantial sequence of common or closely structured courses in areas such as humanities, social sciences, civilization studies, and the arts. For someone interested in history and English, that means sustained exposure to primary texts, argument-driven writing, and interdisciplinary historical questions from the beginning of college.

But for history and English as the main academic priority, UChicago offers the more distinctive and deeply humanities-oriented undergraduate structure.
