Penn State can be the more sensible investment for a student drawn to its broad University Park experience, extensive alumni network, and strengths in areas such as engineering, business, supply chain, information sciences, and many applied sciences. Its alumni connections are especially meaningful in the Mid-Atlantic and Northeast, and the university’s career fairs and employer relationships are a real asset. It is also worth comparing the particular college within each university, since opportunities can differ considerably by major.

Do not compare only the published out-of-state tuition figures. Calculate each school’s four-year net price after institutional scholarships, including housing, food, travel, health insurance, annual tuition increases, and any program-specific fees. UIUC charges can vary by college and major, while Penn State’s cost and experience depend on whether the offer is for University Park or another campus.
