Which is better for studying nutrition science as an undergraduate, UIUC or Tufts?
I’m a high school senior comparing UIUC and Tufts because I want to major in nutrition science. I’m trying to understand which school offers the stronger overall undergraduate program for this field.

For a student who wants a structured, science-heavy nutrition degree with especially strong preparation in food science, metabolism, dietetics, or the food industry, UIUC is likely the more direct undergraduate fit. Its Food Science and Human Nutrition program is an established major with distinct pathways in areas such as human nutrition, dietetics, and food science, plus substantial lab and agricultural resources. The scale of UIUC also tends to create more course and research options across chemistry, biology, food processing, and related health fields.
Tufts is particularly appealing for a student who sees nutrition through a public-health, policy, global-health, or social-science lens. Its undergraduate nutrition program is closely connected to the university’s nutrition faculty and the Friedman School of Nutrition Science and Policy, giving the field an unusually interdisciplinary presence on campus. Being in the Boston area can also be valuable for students interested in hospitals, community health organizations, medical research, and public-health internships.
Neither school automatically qualifies a student to become a registered dietitian; that path requires meeting current supervised-practice and graduate-degree requirements after college. At UIUC, the dietetics-focused curriculum may make sense for someone who already knows they want that route. At Tufts, a student may have more room to combine nutrition with fields such as community health, psychology, environmental studies, or policy.
