Is Cornell or UC San Diego better for sunny weather?

UC San Diego sits near the coast in La Jolla, where outdoor weather is comfortable through most of the academic year. Cornell’s Ithaca campus experiences four distinct seasons, but late fall through early spring can feel notably gray and wintry.

UC San Diego does have a coastal “marine layer,” especially in May and June, when mornings can be overcast before skies clear later in the day. Even so, rain is limited, temperatures are rarely extreme, and students can spend a great deal of time outside year-round.

At Cornell, autumn can be beautiful, and spring and summer are pleasant, but sunshine is less dependable during the school year. Winters bring short daylight hours, icy conditions, and frequent overcast skies, while the hilly campus can make cold or wet walks more noticeable. Students who thrive on warm weather often find the adjustment to Ithaca significant.

For sunny weather specifically, UC San Diego is the clear choice. Cornell can be a great fit for someone who enjoys seasons and does not mind a real Northeast winter, but its climate does not align as closely with a preference for consistent warmth and sunshine.
