Cornell vs. Swarthmore: Which has more discussion-based classes?

Swarthmore will provide more consistently discussion-based undergraduate classes, especially from the first year onward. Its small liberal-arts setting, close faculty access, and seminar-oriented humanities, social science, and natural science courses make regular student participation a central part of the academic culture. At Cornell, discussion is available and often excellent, but the experience varies much more by college, major, course level, and instructor.

At Swarthmore, many classes are small enough for every student to be expected to contribute, challenge readings, workshop ideas, and learn from classmates. Even in quantitative or lab-based subjects, students tend to have substantial interaction with professors and peers. Introductory courses can be larger than advanced seminars, but the overall scale of the college means large anonymous lecture experiences are less common.

Cornell offers a far broader range of programs and courses, including many intimate seminars, especially in upper-level humanities and social sciences. However, students should expect that some introductory courses, particularly in popular STEM fields, economics, and pre-professional programs, may be taught in large lecture formats with separate discussion sections led by graduate teaching assistants or instructors. Cornell’s undergraduate colleges also differ: Arts and Sciences and some smaller programs may feel more seminar-driven than Engineering, Dyson, or other programs with sizable required introductory sequences.

For a student who wants discussion to be the default classroom mode rather than something to seek out through course selection, Swarthmore is the more natural match. Cornell can still work well for a discussion-oriented student who is willing to choose smaller seminars, attend office hours, and navigate a larger university environment.
