Should I Choose Cornell or Georgetown for a Career in Public Service?

Georgetown is the more advantageous choice for a long-term public-service career because its Washington, D.C., location makes government, nonprofit, policy, and international-affairs experience part of the normal undergraduate routine. Students can pursue semester-long internships during the academic year with federal agencies, congressional offices, advocacy organizations, think tanks, and international institutions without leaving campus or pausing their studies.

The academic ecosystem also aligns closely with public service. Georgetown’s government-related programs create frequent access to policy practitioners, public officials, and issue-focused events. For a student who is still deciding among domestic policy, international affairs, law, elected office, or nonprofit leadership, that proximity can make it easier to test paths early and build a credible résumé before graduation.

Cornell remains an excellent option, particularly through its strengths in policy research, labor, environmental issues, rural affairs, and quantitative analysis. Its Ithaca setting can support a more traditional residential-campus experience and deep faculty relationships, but most Washington-based opportunities require more deliberate planning through summers, breaks, or an off-campus semester.
