I am a high school senior deciding between studying at UT Austin and pursuing medicine at Université Paris Cité. My long-term goal is to become a practicing physician in the United States, so I want to understand which path is more directly suited to that goal.

For a goal of practicing medicine in the United States, UT Austin is the more direct and lower-risk path. You can complete a U.S. bachelor’s degree, take the MCAT, fulfill prerequisites for U.S. MD or DO programs, and apply as a domestic applicant. UT Austin’s Health Professions Office provides pre-health advising, and its location also offers access to clinical, research, and service opportunities relevant to U.S. medical-school applications.

At UT, your major does not need to be biology or another science, but you would need to complete the required science coursework and build a strong academic and clinical record. Attending UT does not guarantee admission to Dell Medical School or any other medical school, but it places you in the standard U.S. premed pipeline and avoids the extra credentialing steps faced by international medical graduates.

Medical training at Université Paris Cité would prepare you for the French system first. To practice in the U.S. after earning a French medical degree, you would be treated as an international medical graduate and would need to meet ECFMG requirements, pass the required USMLE exams, obtain U.S. clinical experience and letters where possible, and match into a U.S. residency program. Residency positions are substantially more uncertain for international graduates, even when they are excellent students.

The Paris route also requires studying and training at a high professional level in French and navigating a curriculum, clinical system, and licensing structure designed around French practice. Before enrolling, you would need to confirm the school’s current ECFMG eligibility and understand exactly how its degree pathway aligns with U.S. requirements. For someone committed specifically to a U.S. physician career, UT Austin preserves more options and creates fewer avoidable barriers.
