Neither school is automatically “more fun,” but Michigan State tends to create a more contained, campus-centered social experience, while UT Austin offers a livelier mix of campus life and a major city. Michigan State fits the student who wants a classic Big Ten environment: a sprawling residential campus, highly visible athletics, frequent student events, Greek life, tailgates, and a social scene where weekends often revolve around campus. East Lansing is closely tied to the university, so MSU can feel immersive and communal. It may be particularly appealing if you want social opportunities to be convenient and campus traditions to be a major part of your routine.

UT Austin suits someone energized by choice and independence. Its student organizations, athletics, Greek life, and campus events are substantial, but Austin adds an unusually broad range of things to do without relying solely on university programming. You can meet people through campus groups, then have access to live music, outdoor activities, restaurants, and city events. The tradeoff is that UT can feel more decentralized: students’ experiences vary more depending on where they live, what communities they join, and how proactive they are.
