Is Arizona State or Stony Brook better for building a career in New York?

For a student planning to begin a career in New York, Stony Brook is the more direct path. Its Long Island location puts you within reach of New York City internships during the academic year, and its SUNY alumni network is especially established across New York employers, public agencies, health systems, research institutions, and regional companies. Recruiters in the metro area are also more likely to know the school well and maintain recurring relationships with its departments and career office.

Stony Brook can be particularly useful for STEM, healthcare, research, and technology-oriented careers. The university’s ties to Long Island’s research and healthcare ecosystem, plus access to NYC, make it easier to build a local résumé before graduation rather than relying only on a post-graduation job search. Being able to attend interviews, networking events, and part-time or semester internships without flying home is a meaningful advantage.

Arizona State has a large, active alumni base and strong career resources, especially in the Southwest and in nationally mobile fields. It can still lead to New York opportunities, but you would need to be more intentional about seeking New York internships over summers, using alumni outreach, and attending virtual recruiting events.
