The biggest practical difference is proximity: the University of Washington puts you in Seattle throughout college, while Arizona State requires you to deliberately build Seattle connections from out of state. UW students have much easier access to local internships during the academic year, employer events, alumni, and part-time opportunities that can turn into full-time roles.

ASU can still lead to a Seattle job, particularly for students with strong internships, projects, and networking habits. It has a large alumni base and solid programs, but its most immediate recruiting ecosystem is centered in Arizona and the broader Southwest. An ASU student targeting Seattle should plan early: apply for Seattle summer internships, connect with UW- and Seattle-based alumni through professional networks, attend virtual recruiting events, and be prepared to travel for interviews or networking when useful.

UW also offers an advantage that is easy to underestimate: you can learn the city while enrolled. You can build relationships with local organizations over several years, understand Seattle’s industries and neighborhoods, and potentially keep an internship or campus-year role during the school year. That continuity often matters as much as the name on the degree.

For the specific goal of starting a career in Seattle, the University of Washington is the more direct and better-positioned choice. ASU is a reasonable option if it is substantially more affordable or offers a notably better academic fit, but it will require more intentional effort to create the same Seattle pipeline.
